Screed is a thin layer of specialist concrete that is poured over a concrete floor base to create a smooth, level surface that can accommodate the final floor covering such as tiles.
It is used to level out a concrete sub-base providing an even finish for laying flooring such as carpets and tiles.
Screed is important to give an even and smooth surface to a sub-base that may otherwise be uneven. Correctly laid screed will ensure a level floor surface that will not vary by more than 5mm over a space of 3 metres.
A fine screed is made from cement and sharp sand. A heavy duty or industrial screed would be made from cement and a 6-10mm aggregate for a more coarse screed.
